Brightness and Contrast

#1 The image being edited in the edit window. I like to position it to the left and position the Contrast and Brightness screen to the right so I can view both at the same time.

#2 Check the Real-time preview box so that you can view adjustments as you make them in the other window.

#3 Setting the value here controls how much change is applied when clicking on the thumbnails. The lower the value the less the change. 12 is about the maximum I would use for most editing sessions.

#4 The first time I saw this I was thinking, "what the heck is this?" Why Ulead decided this is a good idea I'm not exactly sure but it does work. The image in the middle is the original image from the editing window (#1). You click on any of the outer thumbnails and it applies the amount of change that you set in the Thumbnail variation box (#3). It's a bit clunky but here is what it does. The windows opposite in position from each other apply the opposite value(s). The 4 corner windows change both brightness and contrast values simultaneously. The 4 inner thumbnails change only brightness or contrast. For example, the thumbnail directly above the center image increases brightness by 12 and the one directly below the center decreases it by 12. With a little experimentation you will figure the rest out.

#5 The slider controls do the same thing. Move them and they will change the image accordingly. They also move when you click on the thumbnails and the number value in the box next to each slider also changes.

#6 The Gamma control makes adjustments more to the mid tones of the image. Where as brightness will increase the overall brightness and contrast works more on the darker areas gamma works more on the mid tones. A value of 1.00 is nuetral.

If things get out of hand or you get confused just click on the RESET button at the bottom and you will start from all nuetral settings again.
